Objectives
The teaching of Biostatistics I aims to promote the acquisition of knowledge about statistical methods that are used to analyse data obtained from epidemiologic studies. The interpretation of the results is also of the utmost importance. Basic concepts on sampling and probability theory will be addressed. Some emphasis will be given to the exploratory analysis where it will be shown how to summarize data and how to present it through tables and graphics. Concerning statistical inference, the concept of confidence interval and the principles of tests of hypothesis will be explained. Parametric and non-parametric tests to compare mean values and proportions of populations using two or more samples (independent or related) will be taught. Tests to study the independence between variables will also be addressed. Practical implementation of the exercises will use the software SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).
This training should promote the following abilities: a) to do an exploratory analysis; b) to identify which is the statistical model that best fits the data; c) to implement the model using the package SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) and d) to read the literature about clinical research studies competently and critically.
