Objectives

The aim of this curricular unit is to develop student’s skills in critically and systematically evaluating research literature in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. The unit content includes: advanced literature search strategies (Pubmed, Cochrane Central, Cinalh, Pedro database); developing a systematic review of the research literature; critical appraisal of primary studies; Narrative systematic literature reviews and meta-analysis. The emphasis is on critical evaluation of musculoskeletal physiotherapy research, including treatment effectiveness, prognosis outcome research, and assessment tools to evaluate change.

Prerequisites

 

Subject matter

  • Narrative systematic reviews and meta-analysis;
  • Systematic Reviews of Diagnostic Accuracy studies, Outcome prognosis and treatment effectiveness; The Prisma Statement
  • Development of a Systematic Review Protocol;
  • Advanced literature search strategies (Medline/Pubmed, Cochrane Central, CINAHL, Embase, PEDro database);
  • Critical appraisal of primary studies; The Pedro Scale; The Consort Statement; The Stard Checklist; QUIPS Tool.
  • Strategies for data Extraction and data synthesis
  • The Grade Guidelines

Teaching method

This unit uses a blended learning approach and includes:

  • Seminars;
  • Small Tutorial Groups;
  • Self-directed Learning;
  • Online discussion forums guided by worksheets and instructions;

Evaluation method

Assessment Methods:

  • A narrative systematic review limited to a maximum of 6 articles. This is a work group assessment (4 students) limit to 3000 words (70%).
  • An essay concerning the implementation of the systematic review findings in the student’s clinical context limit to 1500 words (30%).

The students must have a classification of a minimum of 50% in both assessment activities.
