Objectives

At the end of this unit the student must demonstrate:

Deep knowledge and understanding of the health models;

Deep knowledge and understanding of the function, impairment and chronicity models;

Deep knowledge and understanding of the underlying concepts of the models mentioned above;

Acknowledgement of existing identifying elements of these models in clinical practice;

Ability to analyse these models and respective concepts as fundamental elements of characterization of clinical practice;

Ability to develop practice models, in real clinical settings, accordingly to the theoretical models, introducing change in the present state of affairs.

Subject matter

Concept of Health – evolution and present perspectives;

Concept of function - evolution and present perspectives;

Concept of disability/impairment - evolution and present perspectives;

Concept of chronicity

Health Models – disability models

Implications of the different models in intervention choices and alternatives, at the level of health promotion and disease protection.

Teaching method

The methods used are focused on the analysis of clinical cases and respective underlying models (health and disability). Includes relevant theoretical seminars, group work, individual and group information search, and tutorials.

Evaluation method

This unit is assessed through a written essay. It implies the observation and analysis of a certain real scenario, identification of the underlying models and a reflection of the consequences of these options in terms of the services offered, assessment, effectiveness and quality.
