Objectives

Forensic Medicine integrates the curricula of medical schools since gaining autonomy as a scientific discipline, particularly in Continental Europe. A natureza dos temas que aborda tem implicações no exercício profissional das diversas especialidades médicas e cirúrgicas. Its nature has implications in the practice of various medical and surgical specialties. É uma área do conhecimento com fronteiras mal definidas, e temas comuns, em relação à Ética e Deontologia Médicas, e ao Direito Médico. It is an area of knowledge with poorly defined borders, and common themes in relation to Ethics and Medical Ethics, Law and the Physician.

O conteúdo programático da UC enquadra-se nos elementos definidos pelo documento elaborado sob o patrocínio do Conselho da Europa por Allan Cumming e Michael Ross, intitulado The Tuning Project (Medicine). The syllabus complies with the document prepared under the auspices of the Council of Europe by Allan Cumming, and Michael Ross, titled The Tuning Project (Medicine). Relativamente ao nosso país, enquadra-se igualmente no perfil definido no documento elaborado pela Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa, com a colaboração da Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, intitulado: O Licenciado Médico em Portugal. Projecto: competências nucleares do licenciado em medicina. With regard to Portugal, it also fits the profile defined in the document prepared by the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medical Sciences, titled: The Licensed Physician in Portugal. Project: core competencies of a graduate in medicine.

Encontra-se integrada na área de Ensino e Investigação Genética, Oncologia e Toxicologia Humana da Faculdade de Ciências Médicas It is integrated in the area of Teaching and Research Genetics, Human Oncology and Toxicology ", Faculty of Medical Sciences (Despacho do Director n.º 8586/2010, publicado no Diário da República, 2ª série, N.ª 98, de 20 de Maio de 2010, pp. 27890 e 27891). Our general aims are:

- dotar os alunos com a informação e os conhecimentos científicos e técnicos básicos necessários à compreensão dos conteúdos teóricos e funcionais da Ciência Médico-Legal e da actividade pericial médico-legal; - To provide students with information, scientific knowledge and technical skills necessary for the understanding of theoretical-functional medico-legal science and medico-legal expertise work;

- preparar os futuros médicos para actuar de modo adequado quando confrontados com questões profissionais de carácter médico-legal; - To prepare future physicians to act properly when faced with professional issues with medico-legal implications;

- perspectivar o exercício da profissão médica, na sua vertente clínica, no contexto mais lato da responsabilidade social, profissional, civil e penal do médico, com frequentes repercussões de carácter médico-legal e forense; - To evaluate the practice of clinical medicine in the broader context of social responsibility, professional, civil and criminal responsibility of the physician, with frequent impact of medico-legal and forensic issues;

- contribuir para a preparação do futuro médico para assumir uma atitude preventiva relativamente ao risco clínico ( patient safety ) e à crescente litigância profissional. To contribute to the preparation of future physicians in assuming a preventive attitude in relation to clinical risk (patient safety) and the emerging professional litigation.

Teaching method

Theoretical classes, with theme-oriented and practical examples analysis and discussion. A total of 42 working hours is provided, with 34 contact hours (lectures).Análise e Discussão temática orientada com os/as alunos/as

Cerca de metade dos/das alunos/as frequentará as aulas no primeiro semestre About half of the students will attend classes in the first semester. A outra metade, frequentará as aulas no segundo semestre. The other half will attend classes in the second semester. A divisão é feita segundo a inscrição nas turmas. The division is made according to enrolment in groups.

Língua de ensino: Português Language of instruction: Portuguese

Teaching materials (PowerPoint presentations, notes, etc.) will be distributed online through the Moodle tool (located at the Medical School site). Students must obtain their credentials to access online.

Evaluation method

Students assessment is made at the end of each semester for students who attended that semester (roughly half of the course).

Consiste numa prova escrita, com a duração de 60 minutos, classificada na escala de 0 a 20 valores. It consists of a written test, lasting for 60 minutes, rated on a scale of 0 to 20. São colocadas 3 ou 4 perguntas abertas de resposta rápida, e uma última questão, que consiste num exercício de redacção de um atestado médico com base num cenário proposto no enunciado. It consists of three or four open questions for short response, and one last question, which is an exercise in writing a medical certificate (based on a proposed scenario). As perguntas são todas classificadas com a mesma cotação. Only subjects taught during lectures will be evaluated.
