Objectives

A.      To promote the development of a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic skills, through a tutorial teaching/learning approach.

 

B.      To facilitate a first experience of the students with research in psychiatry and mental health.

 

C.      To integrate the students in the routine practice of multidisciplinary teams.

 

D.    To raise student’s awareness for the public health dimension of mental health problems, highlighting the topic of delivery of care and organization of services (reference, pathways to care, liaison psychiatry).

 

Prerequisites

Psychiatry (5th year).

Subject matter

The clerkship is structured across three major dimensions:
•         Acquisition and integration of new knowledge
•         Specific skills training (eg, individual evaluation, family assessment)
•         Participation in research projects.

Teaching method

The Mental Health clerkship has duration of 4 weeks, on a full-time basis, and includes a module of theoretical and practical seminars (25 h) and a module for clinical practice (75-100 h), in which students can rotate through hospitalization valences, outpatient clinics, day hospital, child psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, rehabilitation and psychiatric emergency.

Teaching includes:

A. Workshops and seminars (discussion of case studies, videos, role-playing, group work)

B. Tutorial clinical practice (“learning by doing”).

 

Evaluation method

1.      Continuous assessment (punctuality, motivation, participation in clinical activities, level of knowledge, level of skills, history taking, research activities, etc).

2.      Preparation and discussion of a final report (description of the working period, critical appraisal).
