A natureza dos temas que aborda tem implicações no exercício profissional das diversas especialidades médicas e cirúrgicas. Its nature has implications in the practice of various medical and surgical specialties. É uma área do conhecimento com fronteiras mal definidas, e temas comuns, em relação à Ética e Deontologia Médicas, e ao Direito Médico. It is an area of knowledge with poorly defined borders, and common themes in relation to Ethics and Medical Ethics, Law and the Physician.

Teaching method

According to international recommendations in the field of medical education, the curricula review of FCM contemplates the adequacy to the needs of society and the questions related with medical professionalism. The new curricular unit of Medicine and Society has as its main purpose the contribution to the teaching of these important dimensions of current medical training, offering the students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and the competencies which are fundamental to understand and to deal with the questions related with the relationship between medical practice and society,  the exercise of medical profession, the ethical and legal implications of medicine, legal medicine, the relationship between medical doctor and other professionals, the political and economical aspects of current medicine and the relationship between medical doctor and the system of health care provision.

The curricular unit of Medicine and Society is formed by 3 modules: “The medical doctor, the patient and the society”, “Ethics, Deontology and Medical Law” and “Introduction to Legal Medicine”. The teaching/learning model will consist of lectures and case discussion sessions. The evaluation will take place with a written examination, having the class attendance a weight of 20% of the final grade.

Evaluation method

(20% assiduity + 10% 3 TRREE Certificates of Training + 70% written examination)

Considering that Clinical Research Ethics is an essential component of every physicians’ Ethical training, every student’s evaluation will include providing, until the day of the final written examination, the 3 certificates of training corresponding to finishing each of the modules 1 (Introduction to Research), 2.1 (Research Ethics Evaluation) and 3.1 (Informed Consent) and 3.2 (good clinical practice), of TRREE’s e-learning website (www.trree.org). This component of evaluation corresponds to 10% of the Curricular Unit’s Final Score.

Students should send by email the 3 certificates PDF to the Course Director email Professor Diogo Pais (diogo.pais@fcm.unl.pt).

The email should include the following information:

“Student full name_-_student number-_-Tclass number”

The assiduity will be valued, and will make up 20% of the final grade.

The regency of this curricular unit believes that attending classes contributes to achieve the educational objectives proposed. For that reason, the portion of the final grade that corresponds to the assiduity is proportional to the number of presences in class, therefore, there will be no default regime for the students that don’t have minimal of attendance. Justified Absences will be appreciated individually.

The written examination will be composed of 3 separate parts:

1 - A set of questions regarding the module “The Doctor, The Patient and The Society”;

2 – Analysis of a case similar to those discussed at the classes of the module of Ethics, Deontology and Medical Law, with the possibility of consultation of the authorized legislation. This case should be freely commented at the basis of the knowledge acquired at Ethics, Deontology and Medical Law.

3 – An open question of quick response concerning the module of Introduction to legal Medicine, and a question that consists in a writing exercise of a medical certificate on a basis of a proposed scenario.

The written examination will make up 70% of the final grade (Module 1 – 50%, Module 2 – 15€ (5%  answer a quick question and 10% make a death certificate)  and Module 3 – 35%

The examination will have the duration of 2 hours, nevertheless, any student may deliver his exam before time ends as long as he doesn’t disturb his fellow students.

In regards to the authorized legislation for consultation at the final exam, it is allowed to use all the legislation given at the classes, as long as it is not unacceptably annotated.
