Objectives

At the end of the unit the student must demonstrate:

·         Knowledge and understanding of the concepts of ageing, demographic ageing, healthy and active ageing

·         Ability to critically analysis and reflect on the implication of the individual and demographic ageing process in the development of societies and health services

·         Ability to critically analyse the challenges that ageing may have for physiotherapists and their practice

·         Ability to critically analyse the evaluation tools and strategies available to the physiotherapist, and select them adequately to fit the context and situation

·         Ability to critically analyse the best available evidence about the intervention of physiotherapy in health promotion

·         Ability to develop, apply, manage and evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention to promote active ageing, within the best available evidence;

·    Ability to implement an autonomous and reflexive practice within the health and wellbeing context, according to the ethical and deontological principles of the profession.

Prerequisites

 

Subject matter

  • Introduction to the concepts of demographic and individual ageing, active and healthy ageing
  • Analysis of the impact of ageing to the individual person – challenges to the physiotherapist
  • Analysis of the impact of ageing to society – challenges to the physiotherapist
  • Evaluation of the physical abilities od the older person – conceptual framework
  • Evaluation strategies – Batteries of modified SFT e FAB; other relevant outcomes – tools and applicability
  • Fundamental principles for the development of exercise and physical activity programmes

Teaching method

The methods used are focused in the students, respecting their professional interests and individual differences. There is a theoretical approach with seminars and lectures and a practical component with workshops. Tutorials are also used. The individual study, bibliographical search, community activities and peer discussion are also used.

Evaluation method

This unit is assessed through a written essay and respective oral presentation
