Education objectives
It is intended that students:
1. Acquire autonomy and the ability to carry out research on a particular subject, linking the ecological
approach to other social sciences;
2. Manage to combine theoretical and methodological knowledge to design innovative research projects, aimed at implementing research problems;
3. Manage to delineate and manage a research project at an advanced level in an integrated and ongoing manner.
4. Strengthen the ability to formally give opinions and make critical judgments, including reflections, on the implications and ethical and social responsibilities in that field of research;
5. Prepare students to solve problems in broadened contexts with complex and innovative interrelationships.
Access conditions
To be admitted to a doctoral programme of studies, the candidate should satisfy the conditions set forth in Portuguese legislation and in the normative conditions of UNL as well as fulfil at least one of the following requirements: a) Holders of the master degree or legal equivalent; b) Holders of a licenciado degree who have a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum vitae that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the FCSH Scientific Council; c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the FCSH Scientific Council.
Degree pre-requisites
Length: 4 years/8 semesters. Student must accomplish 240 ECTS including 60 ECTS in curricular units and thesis and its public defense.

A Doctorate is a final qualification.
Evaluation rules
The cycle of studies leading to a doctoral degree studies includes the completion of a doctoral program consists of course units aimed at training for research ; the completion of an original thesis produced especially for this purpose, appropriated to the branch of knowledge or expertise and that contributes to extending the frontiers of knowledge. Seminars are classified on a scale of 0-20. The final classification of the Doctoral Course is expressed by formulas Approved or Not Approved. In case of approval, the final classification is expressed in the 10-20 range on a scale of 0-20, doing the arithmetic average of the grades in which the courses units awarded with 10 ECTS weights 1 and the Research Project weights 2. Research Project and Thesis are defended before a jury. The final classification of the thesis is expressed by the formulas of Approved or Declined; in the case of the thesis have merited approval, the jury also will vote on a qualification that can be Good , Good or Very Good with Distinction.
