Objectives
a)- Students should be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of linguistic concepts and correct usage of terminology in anthropology;
b)- Students should be able to evaluate linguistic anthropological texts and understand and describe the major principles, controversies, and
critiques;
c)- Students should be able to explain the role of language in creating worldview and social meanings.

1. An introduction to the field of Linguistics.
2. From Saussure to Pierce: sign, symbol, system, semiotic.
3. From Troubetzkoy to Jakobson: phonetics and phonology, sound and meaning.
4. Vendryes, Dumézil, Benveniste: the fields of Diachronic Linguistics.
5. Towards a Cognitive Anthropology: relationship between language and thought.

Teaching method
One hour lecture followed by one hour tutorial class discussions devoted to the theme and central question of the lecture.
Evaluation method
Assessment of Linguistic Anthropology is based on two elements:
- written examination taken during the exam period - 70%;
- continuous assessment (attendance to lectures and participation in class discussions) - 30%.
