Objectives
a) To know the primary sources, bibliography and discography adequate to the study of Music in Portugal in the different historic periods;
b) To know the recent investigation projects about particular aspects of the Portuguese Music;
c) To be able to identify the most significant trends, tendencies, personalities, institutions and musical works in the Portuguese music history;
d) To be able to discuss critically concepts like period and historic context, and processes of music production and reception in Portugal.

Subject matter
1. A short overview of Portuguese musical historiography. Portuguese music in the European and Iberian context.
2. Medieval religious music and its sources. Troubadour music in the Iberian Peninsula.
3. Musical life from the 14th to the 16th century: the Chapel Royal, the cathedral schools.
4. The Spanish period. The end of the 17th century and the Italianization of musical life in the beginning of the 18th century.
5. The introduction of opera. Religious music, instrumental music and domestic music in the 18th century.
6. The 19th century: hegemony of Italian opera; religious music; music education; reaction to Italianism at the end of the century.
7. Impressionistic, nationalistic, neo-classical and neo-romantic tendencies in the first half of the 20th century.
8. Internationalization of musical life after World War II. Vanguard composers. Music in Portugal in the beginning of the 21st century.

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical subject (60% + 40%). In the theoretical classes the teacher will present the subjects. In the practical classes students will be invited to comment and discuss texts, musical auditions and films. They will be asked to prepare small written assignments and oral presentations about specific aspects of the program. The dynamic of the course includes study visits: Teatro Nacional de S. Carlos, Palácio Fronteira, etc.
Evaluation method
Two written tests (40% + 40%). Written assignments and oral presentations (10%). Study visits implie the presentation of written reports (10%).
