Objectives
Aims of the curriculum unit (described in terms of the learning objectives of specific To use the geographical language to characterize the distribution of human phenomena in Portuguese-speaking countries.
a) To contextualize the geographical distribution of Portuguese-speaking countries in the Portuguese Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries and the dynamics of the current world-system.
b)To understand the links of the Portuguese-speaking community as the grounds of a common past and as a result of the world-system dynamics.
c)To identify the main problems and opportunities of the Portuguese-speaking countries in the fields of demography, economic activities and patterns of land-use.
d)To identify the main urban problems of Portuguese-speaking countries.
e)To analyze the models and the impacts of human activities on spatial development of Portuguese-speaking countries from the pre-colonial era to the current globalization stage.
f)To understand the Portuguese-speaking countries specificities.
g)To show skills for research and writing through the preparation of a written essay and an oral presentation of results.

Subject matter
1.Introduction to Human Geography: Concepts of Space, Time and Place.
2.The context of Portuguese-speaking countries in the world: from the dynamics of the Portuguese Empire to the modern world-system.
3.The population of the Portuguese-speaking countries: spatial distribution and social and cultural specificities.
4.The human activities and their impacts: from subsistence agriculture to new methods of production and consumption.
5.Land-Use Patterns: from the pre-colonial matrix to the present globalized world.
6.From rural to urban: the right to the city and the right to housing; the problems of urban management and of sustainability in its different dimensions.
7. Cooperation and development: challenges and opportunities for Portuguese-speaking Countries

Teaching method
Lecture classes / theoretical and practical / participatory approach to the written work, performance of brief exercises and oral presentation of the summary of written work
Evaluation method
Each student is required:
1.Reading of selected texts, in addition with class notes, whose contents will be assessed through a written test;
2.Presentation of an oral summary of the written essay.
Weight percentage of elements of assessment : Continuous assessment, including written work and oral presentation - 50%
