Objectives
1. To acquire general and actualized knowledge on the archaeology of Roman Empire, especially of its western provinces, during Principate and Dominate Period (I B.C.-V A.D.).
2. To know the territorial landscape shapes practiced during Roman Imperial Period.
3. To be able to identify the different roman site types and construction techniques, with special reference to Hispania and, particularly, nowadays Portugal.
4. To be acquainted with the roman urban space structuration and the different types of public equipment and private areas.
5. To acquire general competencies in identifying roman artifacts of the Imperial Period and to be able to initiate the interpretation of the significance of its presence in sites, regions and overall framework.

Subject matter
1. Roman Imperial Archaeology: disciplinary concept, main themes, evolution of the studies in Portugal and contemporary theoretical debate.
2. Shaping the territory in Roman Imperial Age: territorial roman concepts and landscape shape; rural exploitation units; harbour and fishing centers; rural shrines and sanctuaries; urban and suburban spaces; military sites.
3. Archaeology of the Architecture of the Roman Age: methodologies, concepts, construction materials and typologies and architectonic decoration elements.
4. Roman funerary archaeology: the idea of death in Rome, anthropology of the roman funus, funerary architecture and introduction to working techniques.
5. The study of artifacts and its problematic: pottery, glass, metalwork, bone work, organic materials and personal items.

Teaching method
Masterly conducted sessions with image projections. Practical sessions including handling archaeological artifacts. Visits to archaeological sites and museums.
Evaluation method
Two written items, one of wich is a test and the other another test or a paper based on practical work.
Attendance counts for the assessment with a maximum bonus of 1 point.
