Objectives
a) To understand the importance of early avant-gardes on 20th century art.
b) To relate the proposals of early avant-gardes with subsequent artistic developments.
c) To recognize the fundamental questions raised by modernist architecture and its impact during the following decades.
d) To relate artistic production with 20th century socio-economic, political and cultural aspects.

Subject matter
1. Historical avant-gardes: continuity and rupture. Fauvism. Cubism. Abstraction. Dada and Surrealism.
2. Modernism in Architecture and Urban Planning: rationalism and functionalism. Europe and the United States of America.
3. Realisms between World Wars and totalitarian regimes.
4. Neo-avant-gardes: Informalisms, New Figuration, Pop Art, Performance and Conceptual Art.
5. The return to painting in the 1980s.
6. Architecture after World War II.
