Objectives

a) To reflect critically on the concepts of Traditional Literature and Popular Literature.
b) To put in perspective the diversity and specificity of genres of traditional poetry and narrative.
c) To critically analyze novelist texts, ballads (“cancioneiro” and “romanceiro”) and proverbs in the light of the history, form and theme of genders.

Prerequisites

None.

Subject matter

1. Revision of the traditional literature and popular literature concepts.
2. Approach of the major genders of traditional literature - the novelistic, the liric (cancioneiro) and the epic-liric ballads (romanceiro): the limits and the relationship.
3. Texts collections of the portuguese tradition: old and modern testimonials and reference; the themes and the language; axiology and cultural history.

Teaching method

The methodology will be theoretical: it will demand the presentation of arguments and critical analysis in what concerns the students. The professor will lecture on theoretical issues and accompany the works developed by the students.

Evaluation method

The student’s evaluation will result from their class participation, especially through the presentation and the discussion of the work carried out throughout the academic year (50%), and a final frequency (50%).
