Subject matter

In a chronological tour through the 19th-century Portuguese culture, a period of political, social and aesthetic revolutions, we will start with the romanticism, framed between the first decades of constitutionalism and the beginning of \"Pax Regeneratoria\". Garrett and Herculano praise the patriotism and medievalism, in view of the confrontation between liberals and absolutists.
The approach to the second half of the century will be oriented towards the 70´s generation, influenced by socialist and Republicans ideals of the III French Revolution. Its guiding principles were conveyed in the Casino Conferences by authors such as Antero de Quental and Eça de Queiroz: Realism as an artistic expression, Positivism as ideological orientation, the Revolution as a social protest, and Anticlericalism as a secular demand.
In conclusion, a brief reference to the 90´s generation, split between political dissent, as in Guerra Junqueiro or Fialho de Almeida, and the decay, as shown in Oliveira Martins.
