Objectives

a) To study Portuguese Literature of the 20th century, mainly the study of Portuguese modernism through three main authors: Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro, and Almada Negreiros;
b) To contextualise Portuguese vanguards with other European vanguards
c) To be able to critically analise some of the most important texts of the Portuguese modernism.

Subject matter

1. Portuguese Modernism: between tradition and vanguard
1.1. The «Orpheu» group. The magazines
1.2 The «isms»: Paulismo, Interseccionism, Cubism, Futurism, Sensacionismo and others.

2. Three main authors of Portuguese Modernism
2.1. Fernando Pessoa: the poetic of pretending
2.2. Mário de Sá-Carneiro: between the I and the Other
2.3. Almada Negreiros: from Futurism to Surrealism
