Objectives

a) Study several literary works of the XIXth and XXth century.
b) Develop critical and conceptualization skills through the reading of the studied works.
c) Acquire skills to propose new perspectives of the selected texts.

Subject matter

We start by considering that literature opens up a frontier between several discourses and that its main purpose is to reveal skills able to enlarge the experience that the texts allow. We propose a theme: the quotidian.
But how to think about the quotidian in/with literature? How to distinguish its characteristics, how to preserve its inner contradictory construction, continually disjointed between general and particular, between ordinary and sublime, between habit and surprise? How does literature work on the quotidian?
To amplify our suggestions, on one hand, we’ll build a critical reflection on the quotidian by reading Bioy Casares (La invención de Morel), Flaubert (Madame Bovary), Perec (La vie mode d’emploi), Joyce (Ulysses), Sartre (La Nausée), and making that way an alliance with concepts like: distraction (Pascal), habit (Heidegger), memory (Bergson).
On the other hand, we will extract conversion points, disrupting moments, some sense extension forms of the “quotidian” experience and bring them together with other texts: Minima Moralia by Adorno, Mythologies by Barthes, Critique de la vie quotidienne by Henri Lefebvre, La société du spectacle by Debord e L’invention du quotidien by Michel de Certeau.

Teaching method

We will be reading critical texts and literary texts and drawing some conceptualization lines that build theories. We will also analyze and discuss theses, build problems.

Evaluation method

Students are expected to write a paper of about 5 to 9 pages length, by developing problems that have been discussed during the classes. 50%
They will also have to pass a written exam. 50%
