Subject matter
Students will be given the rudiments necessary to understand the structure of Latin language, starting with an overview of the evolution in space and time, since the Indo-European matrices until the historically documented Latin. The emphasis on linguistic aspects will be put in context in the light of historical grammar. In the field of Phonetics, the study of the pronunciation will provide a more natural introduction to the elements of Prosody and phonetic phenomena. Morphology will explore the basics of theme, characteristic, root, and case, later the focus will be on nominal and verbal inflections. Syntax is circumscribed to the functions of cases in simple sentences as maxims and proverbs.
1- Linguistic aspects:
a)History of the Latin language: the Indo-European matrix, Latin and the major Italic groups; the structure of Latin and the fixation of the cases.
b)Phonetics: the Latin alphabet and its development; differences in pronunciations of Latin, Latin Prosody elements. Vowel and syllabic quantities, accentuation rules, the basic phonetic phenomena: ablaut, rhotacism, assimilation, the dissimilation, the crasis and syncope.
c)Morphology: notions of lexeme, morpheme, root, theme, characteristic and case; the gender, number and case; the nominal flexion of the substantive; verbal flexion: categories of voice, mood, aspect, tense, people; invariable words: prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions, interjections, conjunctions and coordinative purposes and some subordinate conjunctions (with indicative mood).
d)Syntax: the syntax of the cases, the order of words in the proposition, the Latin phrase: simple and independent propositions and the parataxis.
2- Lexicology: Degrees of root alternation in the formation of some words.
3- Analysis and commented translation of original Latin proverbs and maxims.
