Objectives
a) To develop the knowledge of Latin language in order to read and understand Latin texts of moderate difficulty.
b) To seize Latin structures in order to translate Latin texts into Portuguese, aiming the improvement of Portuguese language.
c) To be able to translate simple sentences from Portuguese into Latin.
d) To recognize the similarities of morphosyntactic and lexical Latin structures with those of Romanic languages, mainly Portuguese, in order to understand the evolution from Latin into Portuguese.
e) To acquire minimum knowledge of Roman culture and literature in order to be able to understand the texts.
f) To establish relationships between traces of Roman culture and the western culture.
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
LATIN:
1. Historical phonetics: a) consonants; b) phonetic phenomena (occasional references).
2. Historical morphology: a) inflections: irregular nouns; b) the pronouns; c) verbs: infectum vs. perfectum; nominal forms of the verb.
3. Syntax: modes of the independent clauses; b) subordinate clauses.
4. Lexicology: a) history and structure of the Latin lexicon; b) formation of words: compound words.
THEMES:
a) The Roman theatre: Plautus, Miles Gloriosus.
b) Mos maiorum and Roman values: Livy, Ab urbe condita.

Teaching method
The teaching method used is the direct one with progressive approach.
Evaluation method
The evaluation consists of two written tests. The final mark will be the arithmetic mean between both tests, counting each 45%. The other 10% concerns students oral participation.
