Objectives

1-Translating german texts from XVIIIth,XIXth XXth into portuguese.
2- Praticing translation skills aiming performative confidence by translating german short texts into Portuguese attending to their respective literariness.
3- Summoning and praticing: observation and analysis while understanding both diferentt linguistic, stilistic and narratological layers while understanding both texts literariness.
4- Summoning,comparing and applying grammar rules according to morphology: noun gender; noun and adjective formation; preposition’s relevance to a particular meaning; verb:tense, aspect mode;«Satzklammer» towards semantic and rhythmic phrasal balance aiming text’s economy – while observing declarative, imperative,interrogative, sentences and portuguese language level improvement.

Subject matter

1.Translating a selection of Lessing’s,Grimm’s and Hesse’s and Zweig’s paradigmatic fables, Märchen, narrative excerpts, respectively –to be handed out by the professor- according to student’s competence towards practicing his skills to translate various narrative mode.
1.1./1.2./1.3-Fable from Esopo, Grimm and Märchen selection according to respective paradigmatic gender importance and dimension and Hess’s and Zweig’s narrative excerpts selection after reading and commenting the whole text, summoning thus full comprehension of it, thus aiming gradual overcoming of lexical, grammatical, literary complexity.

Teaching method

Practical translation lessons of paradigmatic texts selected according to the linguistic, literary, historical-political student’s knowledge level aiming gradually to overcome future lexical, morphological, syntactical and cultural handicaps.
Lectures sessions on gender’s/ author’s literary text to be translated aiming literariness comprehension; translation’s proficiency; translator versus literary author.

Evaluation method

Assessment: three open-book (dictionaries) tests - 90%; qualified accomplishment of individual assignments and participation in class - 10%.
