Objectives

a) To acquire translation skills into the foreign language in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities;
b) To develop linguistic proficiency in written German;
c) To be able to analyze the specific characteristics of a variety of texts;
d) To become aware of differences between the two languages;
e) To develop analytical skills and flexibility;
f) To be familiar with and know how to use a variety of research means;
g) To develop the ability to reflect upon and self assess one´s own translations.

Prerequisites

German language competence level A2.2.

Subject matter

a) Practise translation of texts in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities (including Tourism) into the foreign language;
b) Translation issues (specific jargon, terminology, phraseology);
c) Error analysis;
d) Resolution strategies (use of corpora, databases, dictionaries, glossaries, parallel texts in the target language).

Teaching method

Analyzing and translating texts from Portuguese into German, correcting texts translated by fellow students, systematizing translation knowledge in general and knowledge of academic texts in particular, creating conceptually organized glossaries, seeking examples of academic translations, tests and correction of tests.
Reflection on translation processes and strategies.

Evaluation method

Coursework: 33.3% - Active participation in class; translation of texts, with and without previous preparation, individual and in groups, in class and out of class; critical analysis of translated texts and difficulties; autonomy and ability to self-monitor.
Formal assessment: 66.6% - 3 class tasks
Attendance: minimum two-thirds of classes

Courses
