Objectives

1.Summoning knowledge about german and european XIXth to introduce facts and concepts about german literary movements : Junges Deutschland/Vormärz, Bürgerlicher Realismus e Naturalismus.
2.praticing skills aiming literary works’ (star) close reading and comprehension of programmatic texts (satelite), both selected as paradigmatic of literary movement and gender according to a pratical-theoretical point of view:
2.1-Comprehensive reading.
2.2.Observing and annotating singularities shown in literary author-work, movement-gender.
3.Summonning skills for reflexion on literary-history interaction – under thesis-antithesis-synthesis rhythm – reflected upon historical-cultural sequence during XIXth.
4.Summoning synthesis skills through individual assignments: to write down small essays to prove paradigmatic character of literary works born in Germany at this Europe’s epoch: 4.1. referring literary gender and movements; 4.2. poetical communication within literary creation.

German language competence level A2.2.

Subject matter

1.Comprehending literary movements in Germany‘s XIXth: Junges Deutschland/Vormärz, Bürgerlicher Realismus e Naturalismusfocusing a dynamic literary crisis overcoming:
1.1-From absolute reality literary representation through Phantasie und Ironie during national conscience’s consolidation romantic period to the social-historical reality representation of present-day life Tagesliteratur in Junges Deustchland/Vormärz with the help of Märchen, Poems and Drama close reading.
1.2.-Social-historical literary representation, according to a mild realistic idealistic perspective - played by a culturally and politically dominant bourgeoisie committed to the Reich’s unification - by means of paradigmatic Bürgerlicher Realismus’ Novellen and poems close reading.
1.3.Representation of social-historical reality under a modern, revolutionary, experimental literary perspective defended by a either tradition or contemporary cultural movements reguarding writer´s poems and drama close reading.

Teaching method

Teaching methodologies include exposition lectures aiming to critical reading, encouraging the commentary and historical-cultural contextualized synthesis; role-play reading session.

Evaluation method

Assessment: three open-book tests (85%); three individual small assignments and qualified participation in class ( 15%).
