Objectives

a) To provide students with an overall view of Spanish Literature of the Golden Age.
b) To improve knowledge of Spanish and European 16th and 17th centuries historical, social, literary and artistic backgrounds.
c) To develop critical reading skills on literary texts of that period.
d) To learn how to search, select and interpret significant information (textual and non-textual), through transdisciplinary perspectives, regarding the proposed subjects.
e) To learn
 how

 produce
 independent
 critical
 opinions
on different topics and texts.
f) To stimulate the autonomous production of knowledge through the development of critical selection, analysis and evaluation of relevant information.

Subject matter

1. Introduction to 16th and 17th centuries Spanish Literature, in the Iberian and European contexts (historic, literary and aesthetic dimensions).
2. Literary genres and periods in a comparative perspective: Renaissance and Baroque - norm and deviation.
3. Picaresque in prefiguration of modern romance: Lazarillo de Tormes and inversion of epics.
4. San Juan de la Cruz and mystical literature: orthodoxy and heterodoxy in imperial Iberian Peninsula.
5. Cervantes and Don Quijote de la Mancha: perspectivism, metafiction, novel structures and rythms.
6. Problematizing Reality in Calderon de la Barca´s philosophical theatre: La vida es sueño.
7. Lope de Vega´s Arte Nueva de Hacer Comedias. El burlador de Sevilla, by Tirso de Molina, or Don Juan´s myth - Golden Age´s spectacular theatre.
8. Love and death in Quevedo´s sonnets. Golden Age´s poetical conceptions - conceptism and culteranism.

Teaching method

Presentation of the various topics by the lecturer; reading and discussion of a selection of texts covering the topics outlined in the syllabus; tutorial supervision of the research work related to the final paper chosen by the student.

Evaluation method

The final paper (20%) and two written tests in class (20%, 60%).
