Objectives

a) Acquire a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between the historical, cultural, social and political dimensions of nineteenth-century France;
b) Develop knowledge about the nineteenth-century France and seize the main complexities of the century;
c) Analyze and compare various forms of intervention (painting, music, literature);
d) Reflect on theoretical texts and essays related to the most relevant topics;
e) Produce reflections and critical thinking about issues related to the themes addressed during the semester.

None.

In the context of the defined objectives for the course the following themes will be developed :

5. The Restoration and the July Monarchy
6. The Revolution of 1848
7. Cultural trends (II): Realism
8. The Second Republic
9. \"The last day of a condemned man\": Victor Hugo and the debate on death penalty
10. Cultural trends (III): Naturalism
11. The Second Empire
12. Napoleon III
13. Cultural trends (IV): Baron Haussmann and the urban transformation of Paris
14. The crisis of 1870
15. The Paris Commune
16. Utopias, Anarchism and Socialism in the nineteenth century France
17. Cultural trends (V): Impressionism
18. The Third Republic: Institutions

Teaching method

Theoretical lectures (60%) combined with practical classes (40%).

Evaluation method

Two written tests, one in the middle and one at the end of the class period (60%). Oral presentation (30%). Attendance and participation in practical classes (10%).
