Objectives

1. Development of the competences of analysis and criticism related to translation in the literary domain;
2. Identification and suggestion of adequate solutions to the difficulties and specificities of literary translation;
3. Awareness and practice of the various modalities of translation, applying them coherently and pertinently to the practical cases presented.

Prerequisites

Intermediate French language competence.
Excellent knowledge of the Portuguese language.

Subject matter

1. Reflection on fundamental theoretical issues: language and translation; translation and culture; translation adequacy / acceptability; translation and the creative process;
2. Translation of texts belonging to different cultural moments, and relating to the affirmation and development of the French language (narrative, poetic and dramatic texts);
3. Comparative and contrastive analysis of translations.

Teaching method

Practical and theoretical classes using bibliographical resources to provide support for the translation of literary texts, and also information and communication technologies (with the support of a Moodle platform). 75% minimum attendance is required.
Lectures: 25%. Practical classes: 75%.

Evaluation method

A mid-term test (50%) and a final test (50%). Participation in class is mandatory and includes an oral presentation.
