Objectives

a)Acquire a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between historical cultural, social and political dimensions of twentieth-century France;
b)Increase knowledge of twentieth-century France and seize the main complexities of contemporary France;
c)Analyze and compare various types of intervention (painting, music, literature);
d)Reflect on theoretical texts and essays related to the most relevant topics for understanding the panorama of the century;
e)Produce reflections and critical reasoning about issues relating to the themes addressed during the semester.

Subject matter

1. France in the twentieth century:
1.1. Memory inheritance (literature, art, film and music).
2. France and the construction of Europe:
2.1. France in Europe and worldwide (domestic and foreign policy);
2.2.The two great wars (\"Belle Époque\", \"Années Folles\", \"Front Populaire\", \"Années Noires\" V.eme République, May 68).
3. Multicultural France:
3.1. 3.1. Challenges in Contemporary France: the multiple faces of francophonie.

Teaching method

The curricular unit works on collective and classroom sessions. We seek to a balance between sessions gain momentum by the teacher, the exposure of theoretical contents and practical classes, streamlined by students. Regular use of appropriate web resources shall be encouraged and the Moodle platform will be a used as a main tool for individual and collective work.
Students are assessed by performing two individual written tests, conducted in the classroom in which they should demonstrate detailed knowledge of the works required reading in the program and its competence in the field of critical analysis of proposed textual excerpts, in all its consistency and comprehensiveness. Theorical Lectures: 70%, practical classes: 30%.

Evaluation method

Two written tests, one in the middle and one at the end of the class period (60%). Oral presentation (30%). Attendance and participation in practical classes (10%).
