Objectives
a) To acquire linguistic and cultural knowledge of the different (con)texts from the Social Sciences and Humanities suggested for translation.
b) To develop practical translation skills in the above-mentioned field.
c) To be able to evaluate critically and comparatively different translations of the same source language text.
Prerequisites
english language skills (level B2.2.).
Subject matter
1. General issues involved in the translation of texts from the Social Sciences and Humanities.
2. Intensive translation practice of texts from the above-mentioned field.
3. Analysis and evaluation of lexical/vocabulary choices, stylistics, pragmatics, register, etc.

Teaching method
Presentation of the Social Sciences and Humanities to be explored; ongoing translation practice, identifying the main problems raised by each text; analysis of/comparison between different translations/versions, including, whenever possible, those already published in Portuguese.
Evaluation method
Translations done in class without prior preparation; oral presentation of translations of previously assigned texts (60%); one written test, done in class, at the end of the semester (40%).
Minimal attendance rate: 75% of the total number of classes.
