Objectives
At the end of the course students should:
a) be able to identify and characterize in articulatory terms the sounds of standard French
b) be able to read and make phonetic transcriptions of standard French
c) be able to recognize and explain some peculiarities of the French language at the phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic and enunciative levels
d) be able to apply the acquired knowledge in the analysis of a variety of oral and written corpora
Prerequisites
None. Previous attendance of an introductory course to Linguistics is recommended.

1. Fundamental concepts for the description of natural languages - a review
2. The sounds of French
2.1. Phonetic transcription; articulatory properties of the sounds of French
2.2. Phonological oppositions; variants (free, combinatorial), neutralization and distinctive features
2.3. Distributional analysis - corpus, segmentation, switching, distribution
2.4. Accentual and rhythmic French phenomena
3. Word semantics
3.1. Semantic fields and semic analysis
3.2. The semantic relations
3.3. Fundamental lexicon and specialized lexicon
4. Morphology
4.1. Gender and number: syntactic and semantic functions
4.2. Derivation and composition
5. The enunciation in French
5.1. The formal apparatus of enunciation
5.2. Deixis of person, time and place
6. Syntax
6.1. Principles of analysis into immediate constituents
6.2. Noun, verb and adjunct phrase
6.3. Structural ambiguities

Teaching method
Lectures and practical classes will take place, using recordings, videos and written material (selected texts and worksheets) that will be object of reflection.
Evaluation method
The evaluation will result from the average of two written tests, each one coted with 20 points.
