Objectives

By the end of this course students should be able to:
a) recognize and explain some lexical and morphosyntactic caracteristics of English in comparision with other languages;
b) understand and describe and some semantic properties of the English language;
c) Describe the historical context of the formation and evolution of the English language;
d) identify and describe relevant linguistic phenomena differentiating the main standards and varieties of English.

None.

1. English and its uses througout the world
2. Parametric differences between English and other germanic languages and Portuguese
3. Lexicon: creation, formation, variation and change
3.1. morphemes, and lexical and grmmatical words
3.2. pronominal systems and aspectual and modal auxiliaries
4. Sentence structures
4.1. semantic structure of the clauses
4.2. syntactic structure of the clauses
5. grammatical functions and Case
5.1. thematic and expletive subjects
5.2. ditect and indirect objects and duble objects
5.3. adverbial adjuncts
6. Composition and derivation of simple and complex sentences
6.1. interrogative sentences
6.3. relative sentences
6.4. passives

Teaching method

There will both theoretical lectures and practical work in class and as homework; discussion of reading topics. Summaries and relevant material will be available on the \"moodle\" of FCSH-UNL. Tutorials will be on students´ demand.

Evaluation method

One short written survey (15%), exercises and class participation (15%), two written assignements (70%).
