Objectives

This curricular unite aims at developing abilities involved in reading and writing tasks, especially those concerning academic oral and written genres of texts (notes, summaries and abstracts, scientific reports, short essays, oral presentations), in order to get proficient academic and scientific performances. By the end of this curricular unite, students are supposed to be able to:
a) identify the specificity of textual practices according to contextual activities;
b) be familiar with different reading strategies adjusted to various tasks;
c) make use of linguistic devices involved in textual organization and in enunciative choices;
d) recognize textual regularities among different text genres, especially those concerning macro-organization and enunciative devices;
e) distinguish paraphrasing, summarizing and commenting;
f) include in a convenient way paraphrasing, summarizing and commenting in texts of different genres.

Prerequisites

None.

Subject matter

1. The relationship between social activities, texts and genres of texts. The academic and scientific activity: the interlocutor’s socio-subjective status and communicative goals.
2. Reading strategies; the relationship between reading strategies, context of production and text genre.
3. Identifying and describing linguistic devices involved in textual organization and in enunciative choices in different genres of texts.
4. Paraphrasing, summarizing and commenting: intertextual and metatextual relations; enunciative devices. The double status of paraphrases, summaries and comments: texts and parts of compositional structure of texts.

Teaching method

Theoretical and practical courses (group work and presentations; exercises, workshops) are expected.

Evaluation method

Evaluation will include the following items:
- exercises during classroom and at home (progression along different versions will be taken in account) – 30%
- a short essay, written in classroom – 50%
- an oral presentation on a chosen subject or text – 20%
