Objectives
a) Recognition of the wide-ranging nature of identity formations, stemming from different socio-historical contexts, in Europe and in Portugal, subsumed under generic names such as \"Gypsies\" or \"Roma.
b) Identify the main policies of the European Union and its Member States as regards the recognition of ethnic diversity and the integration of European Gypsies
c) Ability to design research into survival strategies, social representations and inter-ethnic identity strategies with regard to relations between the Gypsies and the other nationals of their different host countries.
d) Ability to advise political and administrative bodies in policymaking concerning gypsy populations.

Subject matter
1. The wide-ranging nature of identity formations, stemming from different socio-historical contexts, in Europe and in Portugal, subsumed under generic names such as \"Gypsies\" or \"Roma.
2. The anthropological and historical development of European and, in particular, Portuguese reaction to the formation of the Gypsy diaspora in Europe.
3. The issues regarding the situation of the Roma in Portugal.
4. The main actions taken by the State, Churches and civic organizations regarding the Roma.
5. The recent strategy of creating ethnic churches their history, stated goals and purposes.
6. Impasses regarding the integration of Portuguese Gypsies in Portugal and the European Union.

Lectures introducing the major topics of the course, and presentation and discussion of selected readings by the students.
Evaluation method
Assessment:
1. Term paper (60%), either a review article or an empirical study. Papers are presented and discussed during the last sessions of the curricular unit;
2. Attendance, participation and presentations in class (40%).
