Objectives

1. Perform an in-depth and critical reflextion about some of the conceptual proposals that throughout the history of anthropology associated the idea of culture to the knowledge, techniques and the making of objects.
2. Discuss the issues studied from the presentation of ethnographic studies, favoring the Portuguese context.
3. Promote scientific discussion and ethically grounded on the possible practical applications of knowledge acquired.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

1. Anthropology has, since its inception, special attention to the study of material culture, conceived as a tangible manifestation of cultures. The knowledge, techniques, and methods of making objects were matters always handled, although thoughtful, over time, within several conceptualization.
2. Portuguese anthropology techniques and ways of doing were, since the pioneering work of the group led by Jorge Dias, a topic of recurring work and subject to constant conceptual updates.
3. In the contemporary world - in which the production of objects fits in very different contexts and modalities - the \"to do\" question proves to be central to thinking about such important issues as the forms of reproduction of social inequalities or modes of construction of personal and collective identities.
