Objectives
The goal of the presenty course is:
1. To give the student a general overview of the establishment and evolution of the Musical Sciences as an academic discipline, in its historical and anthropological components, internationally as well as in Portugal;
2. To acquaint him/her with some of the major contemporary theoretical trends in the Humanities and Social Sciences and with their specific application to the Musical Sciences;
3. To provide him/her with general notions of source theory, field work and research methods in the Musical Sciences.

Subject matter
I - Historical Musicology:
1. Main trends in general historiography; 2. Main trends in Historical Musicology; 3. Musicology in Portugal; 4. Sources for musicological research; 5. Main Portuguese libraries and archives; new research tools; 6. Research methods; 7. General notions of Catholic liturgy and its musical sources.
II - Ethnomusicology:
1. Ethnomusicology and the culture debate; 2. Ethnomusicology in Portugal; 3. Institutions and researchers in Ethnomusicology; 4. Research methods.

Teaching method
Topics are presented by the teacher and discussed in class, in connection with required readings, and/or with practical research cases.
Evaluation method
Students turn in a critical review of a theoretical text and the working plan for an essay (50 % of the final grade each) on a topic of Historical Musicology or Ethnomusicology.
