Objectives
a ) To know the peculiar characteristics of water and its importance for life;
b) To understand the functioning of the hydrologic cycle and its role in the water and heat distribution;
c) To identify the problems related with water resources in the different analysis scales;
d) To characterize the extreme hydrological events and its implications in regional planning;
e) To analyse the problem of water resources management , in particular its economic environmental, legal and social implications;
f) To evaluate the consequences of the climatic change for water resources.
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
1) The characteristics of the water and its importance for life in Earth.
2) The water as constraint factor to the development of ecosystems.
3) The hydrological extremes, its causes, consequences and possible mitigation.
4) The problem of water resources at a Global, European, Mediterranean and Iberian Peninsula scale.
5) The current situation of water resources planning in Portugal: Hydrographical Basin Plans; National Water Plan, Framework Directive Picture of Water and Water Law.
6) Impacts of the climatic change on water resources.

Expositive and Participate.
Evaluation method
- Reading of a set of thematic texts that will be evaluated in a written test.
- Two oral presentations with powerpoint and summary.
- Practical work realised in the classroom.
- Development of an investigation work, based on field work, bibliography and various documentary information resulting from autonomous research, with oral and written presentations.
