Objectives
a) To know the recent changes in trade and distribution in Portugal; b) To understand the logic in the real estate trading and services markets; c) To recognize the logics of retail location at urban scale; d) To discuss the economic and social importance of trade in rural areas; e) To analyse the issues of trade and consumption from a development perspective; f) To understand the importance of Urban Commercial Planning; g) To know some aspects of the evolution of regulation of commercial equipment in the European Union; h) To know the evolution of public intervention in retailing in Portugal; i) To review the experiences of Urban Commercial Planning in Portugal; j) To develop critical thinking about the relationship between new forms of commerce, organization of space and urban lifestyles; k) To develop technical reports in the field of Urban Commercial Planning; l) To apply the acquired knowledge to practical situations, notably in studies of retail location.

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical classes: extensive explanation of program topics; analysis and discussion of textbooks´ chapters and papers; practical exercises in the classes, under supervision. Case studies analysis.
Evaluation method
1) Written test about a set of selected texts (35%).
2) Theoretical and practical work (about 20 pages.), with oral presentation (40%).
3) Short essay on a theme of the program (20%).
4) Presence in the classes and participation (5%).
