Objectives

1.Develop good practices of information acquisition and cartographic design in multidisciplinary settings
2. Apply design methodologies to the design of cartographic layouts
3. Conceptualize solutions for representing multi-scale analysis using the software of geographic information systems
4. Develop skills for independent learning environments to perform cartographic editing with geographic information systems
5. Assessing, scientifically and technically, information structures and knowledge for the land management
6. Develop critical skills in the selection and acquisition of information
7. Apply different solutions on cartographic editing for different audiences

Subject matter

1. Cartography and communication - transmitting messages to different audiences
2. Element types and visual variables in a digital environment
3. Acquisition and editing of information in vector format:
a. Editing / manipulation of features
b. Attributes of the graphics - level, color, thickness and style
c. Vectoring over raster image
d. Use of text
e. Use of color
f. Creating final layouts
4. Generalization and conceptual graphics. Implementation of some generalization operators
5. Validation of digital cartography for geographic information systems
a. Quality control Standards
b. Catalog of objects from the Portuguese Geographic Institute (IGP)
c. Graphic Symbols and Systematization in the Use of traditional territorial planning DGOTDU
6. The layout as a crucial element for transmitting ideas and messages
7. The precision and accuracy of mapping as key elements in a decision process
