Objectives
a) To acquire aware that the social organization of space, territory and landscape in the Middle Ages is the result of the symbiosis between the deep and complex cultural inheritances received from antiquity and innovative aspects resulting from the assertion of a particular society and a Christian mentality medieval.
b) To acquire theoretical knowledge that enable the student to understand the different aspects that characterize the social organization of space.
c) To get an overview of the social organization of space, territory and landscape attentive to geo-chronological variants and the relationship between structures and conjunctures;
d) To acquire an updated knowledge on different aspects of the social organization of space, territory and landscape in medieval Portugal.
e) To acquire contact with medieval sources appropriate to the study of the social organization of space, territory and landscape.

Subject matter
Introduction: Issues and methodologies. The contribution of other social sciences and humanities. The diversity of sources. The Portuguese case. Some operational concepts: territory, town, city and landscape.
1. Space in Middle Ages: variability and variability. Variation of natural factors. Anthropization: Dynamics of occupation and exploitation of natural resources. Mark space: boundaries. Uses and representations.
2. The construction of medieval landscapes: processes, times and experiences. Rural landscapes. Urban landscapes. The experience of landscape. Order and disorder.
3. The medieval territories: continuities and ruptures
Borders. Political territories. administrative territories
