Objectives
a) Introduce the basic knowledge about the development of the discipline nationally and internationally.
b) Introduce the basic knowledge about the conservation and preservation of underwater archaeological heritage
c) Introduce the guide lines for the safeguard and valorization of the nautical underwater cultural heritage both national and international
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
1. Analysis of the human activities related with diving and the maritime salvages;
2. Introduction to the development of this discipline internationally from its most relevant results;
3. Introduction to the development of this discipline in Portugal from its most relevant results;
4. Ship archaeology;
5. Conservation methods of underwater cultural heritage;
6. Management strategies for the protection, safeguard and valorization of underwater cultural heritage.

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical classes:
- Artifact analysis and specific contexts;
- Group works with presentations and results discussion;
- Field visits to the Institutions with recognized work in this area, and to Navy Museum. This will allow the overview of several of the subjects discussed in classes.
Evaluation method
Evaluation elements: one written test, one individual paper and class attendance and participation. The students will be approved with an overall average of 10 values.
