Objectives

At the end of the curricular unit students :
a) must meet a set of concepts that allow to analyze the Portuguese society between the XV-XVIII.
b) be able to identify the main lines of differentiation and structure, main principles and forms of classification and social distinction, the possibilities and limitations of social mobility and the representations of society upon itself.
c) They must know the processes of formation and reproduction of the main social groups.
d) They must know the main sources of social history of the modern Portuguese.
The unit also has the following objectives:
e) Develop analytical skills and understanding of complex systems
f) To develop logical thinking and a critical perspective
g) Develop the capacity and discipline of oral and written
h) Develop the ability to work collaboratively
i) Developing skills for the practice of research.

Subject matter

Theory and Concepts.
Population and settlement.
Structure of the Old Portuguese Society. Systems and criteria of social classification. Social structure and ethnic discrimination. The divisions of society and their boundaries. Social mobility.
Elites - the center and the periphery. The nobility and the nobility. Grades and species of nobility. Birth and service. The guns and the letters. The aristocracy and nobility of the first cut. The aristocratic way of life. The nobility of the province. Local elites: the noble people of the land governance. The Church and the clergy. The army. The royal bureaucracy: magistrates and officers. Merchants and businessmen
Societies and rural communities. The landlord and landlords. Farmers, peasants and laborers.
Urban societies. Artisans and shopkeepers. The people of the cities.
Reformisms and social change.

Teaching method

The classes are of theoretical and practical, consisting in the exhibition by teaching concepts, problems and issues and open discussion or targeted organized around texts previously indicated seeking to promote critical thinking by students, by raising issues and raising their participate in guided discussions. Texts may include both studies as in documentary sources or bibliography. In some classes (depending on the number of students enrolled) the discussion will be organized around presentations by the students themselves.

Evaluation method

The assessment consists of four factors: a) participation in general class discussions (20%) b) animation of a discussion session (25%) c) participation in a collective work (glossary; collection of documents) (15%) d) synthesis assay one or research (40%).
