Objectives
a) To know the main milestones in the history of European colonialism from the Congress of Vienna to the eve of World War
I (1815-1914). b) To know the most important political, religious, military, scientific and economic actors in the history of the
European colonialism. c) To know the principal milestones in the process of Latin America decolonization during the early
nineteenth century. d) To know the contours of the most significant projects of European colonization in Africa and Asia
during the long the nineteenth century. e) To know the transition between the Old Regime and the modern Portuguese
Empire. f) To know the historical evolution of the Portuguese colonialism in the context of the history of Modern European
colonialism.

Teaching method
The methodologies consist in the presentation of theoretical contents by the teacher that will be complemented by practical
sessions devoted to oral presentations by students and discussion.
Evaluation method
Each student must make a written individual paper
(35.000 to 40.000 characters including spaces and footnotes), based on sources and bibliography; the students should also
prepare and participate in an oral presentation, in addition to intervene regularly in discussions. Students must also attend
a specialized seminar and perform a individual written report (8.000 to 10.000 characters including spaces without
footnotes).
