Objectives
Knowing the basic stages of the history of museums and museology; apply the concept of pre-museum; understand the
complexity of the attributes of the museum in Western culture; articulate and distinguish the concepts of museum and
collection; reflect on the importance of artistic practices and for scientific elaboration of the oldest European museums;
understand and implement, through relevant examples, the commitment of political power in the creation of large national
museums; dynamically relate the affirmation of museums in European cities of the nineteenth century with the social,
cultural and of bourgeois culture and technology of the industrial revolution; distinguish types and models of management
of museology historical and contemporary, in Europe and the Americas; Portuguese museums to apply the historical
knowledge acquired; meet, reflect and discuss the problems of contemporary museums.

1: The origins of museums: the collecting and through his understanding of the contributions of anthropology, sociology

Some classes, particularly relating to issues of history museums and museology in Portugal, will be taught by doctoral
students or researchers IHA or other UI with which he relates.
From the third class, students ensure component seminar class, featuring individually or in groups, selected texts chosen
