Objectives

1. Understand the theoretical and methodological principles for information preservation and retrieval.
2. Be able to use and develop standards and guidelines and to apply techniques and other instruments in the fields of storage, preservation and information retrieval.
3. Be able to carry out the planning and implementation of the preservation and information retrieval processes, regardless of the nature of the information, lifecycle stage, mode of production or technological support.

Subject matter

1.Preservation and information retrieval policies and responsibilities. Storage and preservation strategic plan. Costs and business models.
2. Storage and preservation of analog documents.
3. Digitaization and infromation medium transfer. Descriptive requirements associated with the management of archival information of permanent conservation.
4. Digital preservation. Attributes of storage and preservation systems. Metadata requirements for preservation. Digital preservation strategies. The OAIS model. Management and certification of digital repositories.
5. Retrieval of information and documents. Models and forms of information and documents retrieval and their metadata. Information retrieval on the Web. Information retrieval systems evaluation. Bibliographic management systems. Archival management systems. Document management systems and content management.

Teaching method

The seminar will be developed through classroom sessions and students autonomous work.
The classroom sessions will have a theoretical-practical character, being constituted by moments of theoretical exposition of the themes, practical exercises, oral presentations and debates with the students. Students must read the material suggested prior to each class.
The students autonomous work should complement and deepen the knowledge transmitted in the class.

Evaluation method

The evaluation will be made on the basis of the following weighting schema:
-Group Work (written presentation)-45%
-Group Work (oral presentation)-15%
-Text comments (individual)-30%
-Participation (individual) -10%
