Objectives

To acquire deep knowledge on the phenomenon of gothic architecture in Portugal;
To relate Portuguese gothic architecture to the international panorama;
To be able to critically discuss the identity of gothic aesthetics as applied to the Portuguese context;
To identify the characteristics of Portuguese gothic architecture;
To relate the emergence of gothic architecture in Portugal to the actions of the Cistercian Order;
To recognize and be able to characterize the mendicant ´model´;
To characterize the main moment of evolution of Portuguese gothic architecture throughout the 14th century;
To critically manipulate the concept of ´emanuline´ art;
To understand the phenomenon of the noble residence, distinguishing ´paço´ and ´casa forte´;
To intepret the characteristics of militar structures form the gothic period;
To apply the knowledge acquired to a written text/dissertation about gothic architecture in Portugal.

5. The monastery of Batalha and the emergence of late gothic in Portugal
6. The ´manuelino´ as a late gothic expression
7.Civil architecture. The noble residence: the ´paço´ and ´casa forte´. The ´models´ and its spread

Teaching method

Theoretical-practival lessons, with audiovisual material and the use of teaching methods and instruments, such as: texts; images and drawings. The study and preparation for this curricular unit shall be done through constant reading of recommended bibiliography and the support of the material provided in class.

Evaluation method

The evaluation is based on three written works: two book/article review; one research work. All works shall be subjected to oral presentation.
