Objectives

a)To become acquainted with the phenomenon of funerary sculpture in Portuguese Middle Ages;
b)To relate the evolution and main characteristics of funerary sculpture to the mental and cultural context of Portugal in the 13th-15th centuries;
c)To identify all different types of representation materialized in funerary effigies;
d)To know the most important iconographical proposals shaped on tombs;
e)To apply all the knowledge and competences acquired in a written texto/dissertation about funerary sculpture in Portugal.

Subject matter

1. Funerary sculpture as a matter in Portuguese historiography of art – the state of the art; Introduction to the study of funerary art – concepts and problems
2. The medieval ´monument´, between the preparation of death and the celebration of life, between envisioning salvation and the displaying of social status
3. The effigy: emergence, forms and meanings
4. Social representation and ´individualism´: the construction of a memory through image, in a funerary context
5. The proposals of 13th and 14th centuries: iconographical programmes and formal models
6. The novelties and transformations of 15th century: the Batalha paradigm and the results of a changing society
7. Specific cases within Portuguese funerary art of the Middle Ages – monographical studies: solutions, models, particularities and problems.

Teaching method

Theoretical-practival lessons, with audiovisual material and the use of teaching methods and instruments, such as: texts; images and drawings. The study and preparation for this curricular unit shall be done through constant reading of recommended bibiliography and the support of the material provided in class.

Evaluation method

The evaluation is based on three written works: one book/article review; one research work; one written test.
