Objectives
a) To learn, analyze and discuss the range of measures, proposals and achievements that characterized the rebuilding of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755.
b) To consider the architecture and urban layout of Pombaline Lisbon in the context of the citys development between the Restoration period and the beginning of the 19th century.
c) To learn, analyze and discuss the various historical approaches on the Pombaline Lisbon.

The rebuilding of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755: urban layout, architecture and main legislative measures.
Pombaline architecture and town planning within the framework of Lisbon´s urban growth between the mid-17th century and the early 19th century.
The Enlightenment and the city: conceptual approach and urbanistic models.
The historiographical heritage of Pombaline Lisbon.

Teaching method
Theoretical and practical subject that combines classroom lectures with the analysis of texts and images.
Evaluation method
The evaluation focuses on the assessment of a written essay supported by specific bibliography and documentary sources, following an autonomous research work (65%). It is also taken into account the work carried out in the classroom: oral presentation of the essay and discussion of a selection of primary and secondary sources (35%). Attendance is taken into account.
