Objectives
1. Acquire knowledge about the main security studies schools of thought, receiving in this learning process, a framework of analysis that can provide a better understanding over the growing complexity of the strategic and security issues.
2. Understand the conceptual pillars of the States total strategy and its power relations and influence in the international system.
3. Understand the fundamentals that preside to the strategic action and the existing strategic planning models; grasping the technical skills necessary to the enforcement of these strategic models in support to decision making processes.
4. Understand the methodology that encompasses the production of strategic information and its applicability on decision making processes.
5. Acquire knowledge concerning the factors that mold the strategic potential of the States and the existing strategic potential conceptual models.
6. Capacity to analyze the main drivers of change and the evolution tendencies pertaining the post-Cold War strategic environment; understand the contemporary strategic challenges connected with the asymmetrical conflicts and the new typology of the crises, the responsibility to protect, humanitarian intervention, weapons of mass destruction proliferation, transnational terrorism and organized criminality, insurgency and counter-insurgency, climate changes, energy security, etc.

Module 4: Contemporary Strategic Challenges

Teaching method
Presentation of the different subjects by the teacher and other invited specialists; directed debate.
Evaluation method
Participation and oral presentation in class will evaluate the capability to think, debate and explain and will have a 25% coefficient value on the final classification. The final written paper (with no less than 3500 and no more than 5500 words) will evaluate the research and critical analysis capability of the students and will have a 75% coefficient value on the final classification.
