Objectives

a) To define and question the limits of the traditional genders.
b) To critically analyse the pan-hispanic ballads to the light of the history, of the thematic and of the formal structures of the gender.
c) To identify the variability and invariability of the poetic updating of the pan-hispanic ballads and question the phenomena, considering the more recent methodological and theoretical contributions.
d) To critically analyse the writers creations of works with elements of traditional pan-hispanic ballads and reflect about the creative stratagem.
e) To plan and to develop works of inquiry in the area of studies of the Traditional Literature, utilizing the adequate methodological and theoretical instruments.

Subject matter

1. The current debates about the concept of Traditional Literature
1.1. The perspectives “neo-pidalinas”, oralistic and ethnographic;
1.2. The specificity of a corpus literary preserved in the collective memory
and transmitted orally;
1.3. The relevance of the notions of \"people\" implicit in the current argument.
2. The limits and the influences of the genders of the Traditional Literature.
3. The Old and the Modern Tradition of pan-hispanic ballads.
3.1. The subjects, the form and to poetic of the pan-hispanic ballads;
3.2. The historical and geographical transversally of the pan-hispanic ballads and their relationship with the process of conservation and recreation.
3.3. The inquiry of field work and the edition of the texts preserved by collective memory: methodologies, criteria and supports of fixation.
4. The presence of the traditional pan-hispanic ballads in works of individual creation: modalities, meaning and functionality:
4.1. in the theatre of the centuries XVI and XVII;
4.2. in the literature of the century XIX and in the subsequent literary output.

Teaching method

The methodology will be theoretical: it will demand the presentation of arguments and critical analysis in what concerns the students. The professor will lecture on theoretical issues and accompany the works developed by the students.

Evaluation method

The student’s evaluation will result from the appreciation of his personal inquiry (competences level with the planning, of the research and of the establishment of the adequate methodology) presented and discussed in the academic period (50%) and of a final essay (50%).
