Objectives

a) To contextualize Camoes’s life and work in Renaissance period.
b) To identify and qualify the lyric forms of Camoes’s work.
c) To identify and comment the lyric themes of Camoes’s work.
d) To analyse a lyric poem under an aesthetic way.
e) To define the concept of epopee and to contextualize historically the several epopees.
f) To recognize the external and internal structure of an epic poem.
g) To identify and comment the narrative space and time representation in Camoes’s epic poem.
h) To characterize the historic and mythological figures of Camoes’s epic poem.
i) To perspective a cultural representation of other people in Camoes’s epic poem.
j) To analyse and comment the cultural debate of Portuguese Expansion in 16th century.
k) To appreciate and debate European and World a representation by Camoes.

Subject matter

1. Lyric work: traditional forms of Renaissance (old and new metrics); Greek-Latin, Italian, Iberian poetic forms; themes and development: love, nostalgia (saudade), nature, exile, changing; rhetoric of contrast and contradiction (Catullus and Petrarch).
2. Epic work: concept of epopee; classic, medieval and renascent epopees; external and internal structure of the epic poem; poetry of History and Geography: mímesis, diégesis and poíesis; propositio, invocationes, dedication, narratio – epic object and goals; historical and mythological figures; space and time representation; gods “comedy” and historical designs - Olympic conflict, Bacchus’s persecution, Neptune’s “palace”; African’s and Indian’s cultural representation: Other’s knowledge; Expansion debate (dialectic and rhetoric) - Restelo’s Old man, Adamastor; Time and World “machine”: epic representation of the pass (analepsis) – Vasco da Gama’s discourse to Melinde’s king and the flags badges in Paulo da Gama’s discourse to Catual – future representation (prolepsis) – Tethys prophecies: Portuguese empire and national heroes; renascent Europe: Cadmus’s myth and Christianity divisions; the “pequena Casa Lusitana” example; satyr and pedagogical exemplum: humanist code of ethical values: Venus’s Island allegory.
