Objectives

• To acquire knowledge of literary-aesthetic-cultural nature of the first quarter of the XXth century in German;
• To read critically axial German authors;
• To develop skills for reflective and interactive reading of literary texts and their relation to history.

Subject matter

1.Comprehending Modernity in german narratives of XXth’s first quarter by studying identity crisis represenred by the narrator;observing and emphasizing literary characteristics to focus on tradition renewal, by assimilating identity crisis to a natural expression of multiple subject’s voices along with Der Steppenwolf, Kurzgefasster Lebenslauf:Hesse; Ein Bericht für eine Akademie,Die Verwandlung:Kafka; Der Tod in Venedig:Th.Mann;Die Verwirrungen des jungen Törless:Musil;Traumnovelle,FräuleinElse:Schnitzler;BriefeinerUnbkannten,Vierundzwanzig Stunden aus dem Leben einer Frau:Zweig close reading within a psychico-sociological contextualization.
2.Observing and emphasizing diegetic features heading Moderne aesthetic strategy to present, through «irony», silence-perplexity overcoming within narrative discourse by axials close reading. Improving essays on aesthetical-social-historical interaction aiming better comprehension of Moderne’s aesthetics.

Teaching method

Lectures and axial text explanation; comment on complementary text; synthesis and historical-cultural contextualization.
Synthesis lecture and subsequent role-play reading session.
Active participation in discussion is expected.

Evaluation method

Assessment:open-book test (50%); two oral presentations (5%+5%) and a written work of 16 pages/20 ll./page (40%).
