Objectives

a) To develop skills in knowledge of the literatures of the Iberian Peninsula, from the perspective of comparative literature.
b) To depth knowledge of the respective social and historical-artistic-literary, national, Iberian and European contexts.
c) To know the contexts which determine those constructions.
d) To study the proposed texts to prepare a personal investigation.
e) To produce work of textual analysis and theoretical reflection, applying the knowledge acquired.
f) To produce na autonomous research project and a research paper, which will be presented and debated orally.

Prerequisites

Medium knowledge of Spanish.

Subject matter

1. The magical realism concept.
2. The origins of the Iberian magical realism: folk traditions, everyday practices, beliefs and attitudes, culture and literature over the centuries.
3. Processes receiving the Spanish-American magical realism in the Iberian Peninsula in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
4. Contemporary Iberian literatures:
a) Os Casos do Beco das Sardinheiras, de Mário de Carvalho (1982); and A Jangada de Pedra, de José Saramago (1986).
b) Si o vello Sinbad volvese as illas (Cuando el viejo Simbad vuelva a las islas), de Álvaro Cunqueiro (1961); Cantiga de agüero, de Carmen Gómez Ojea (1982); and Bi anai (Dos hermanos), de Bernardo Atxaga (1985).

Teaching method

Presentation of the various topics by the lecturer; reading and discussion of a selection of texts covering the topics outlined in the syllabus;
Tutorial supervision of the research work related to the final paper chosen by the student.

Evaluation method

1-Oral presentations, seminars, readings and research results on the objectives of the seminar and its group discussion (40%); 2- written and oral discussion of a final work, individual, including bibliography (12-15 pages), guided by the teacher (60%).
